Every learner needs something different
No two Grade 12 Afrikaans FAL learners are exactly the same, which is why I adapt each online lesson to the learner in front of me.
Some learners mainly battle with limited Afrikaans vocabulary. They may understand a few words when they hear Afrikaans, but struggle to understand exam questions, comprehension passages, poems and stories. They may also know what they want to say, but cannot always find the Afrikaans words to write a good answer.
Other learners understand more Afrikaans than they realise, but lack confidence. They are scared of making mistakes, so they give very short answers, avoid speaking Afrikaans or panic as soon as they see an exam paper.
I am good at reading my learners and recognising where the real difficulty lies. Sometimes it is vocabulary. Sometimes it is grammar, literature, writing or comprehension. And sometimes the learner simply needs someone to believe in them before they can believe in themselves.
That is why every Grade 12 Afrikaans FAL exam-prep workshop is adapted to the learner’s individual needs. We focus on the areas that will make the biggest difference to understanding, confidence and exam results.
A tutor who cares
I put my heart into every lesson. Sometimes that means sending study notes, extra questions and useful reminders late at night because inspiration and Afrikaans grammar, does not always keep office hours.
Then, the next day, a learner says, “Oh, I did not see it yet.” My study notes are probably sitting there with a virtual cup of coffee, waiting patiently to be opened.
But then there are learners who do open the notes. They attempt the questions, revise between lessons, ask questions and keep trying. Those are the moments that make everything worthwhile. Their confidence grows, their answers improve and, very often, their marks improve too.
